Frequently asked questions.

  • Counselling and psychotherapy are both forms of talking therapy that can help people manage and cope with their mental health and emotional wellbeing. The main difference between counselling and psychotherapy is the length of time each is typically undertaken. Counselling is usually short-term and focuses on a specific issue or problem, while psychotherapy usually involves longer-term therapy and delves deeper into the underlying issues and causes of the problem. Both counselling and psychotherapy use a range of techniques to help people understand and manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

  • Each session will vary depending on the individual’s needs and the counsellor’s approach. Generally, a session will involve talking about the issue(s) the individual wants to address and exploring thoughts, feelings, and behaviours related to it. The counsellor may also provide guidance and use a range of techniques to help the individual manage their issue(s).

  • The length of counselling will depend on the individual’s needs and the frequency of the sessions. Generally, counselling sessions are held regularly, between once a week and once a month, for a period of time. Some people find that a few sessions are enough to help them manage their issue(s) while others may need more ongoing support.

  • No. As psychotherapists, we do not prescribe medication.
Only physicians, psychiatrists, and nurse practitioners have prescribing authority in Ontario.

Our focus is on talk therapy, emotional processing, coping strategies, trauma-informed care, and helping you understand your thoughts, patterns, and nervous system.
If medication may be helpful, we can collaborate with your family doctor or psychiatrist as part of a holistic care plan.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a well-researched, practical form of therapy that helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
It teaches you how to recognize unhelpful thinking patterns, reduce worry spirals, and respond to anxious thoughts in healthier, more grounded ways.

CBT is especially helpful for anxiety because it:

    • Helps break the “what if?” worry loops

    • Teaches skills for calming the body and nervous system

    • Builds confidence in managing overwhelming thoughts

    • Offers tools that you can use outside of therapy

    • Reduces avoidance, panic, fear, and overthinking

    • Creates real, measurable change in how you feel day-to-day

CBT is structured, collaborative, and empowers you with strategies that make anxiety more manageable and less controlling.
Many clients appreciate that CBT gives them both insight and practical coping tools they can use right away.
